A mother’s treat of tea off the boil | Brief letters

Emma Beddington’s memory of her children “wobbling in once a year” with breakfast on Mother’s Day (I worship Nigella Lawson. But I disagree with her – very strongly – about eating in bed, 16 September) made me smile as I remembered my son in his early teens proudly bringing me breakfast one Mother’s Day.He made boiled eggs with buttered toast but, being in a family known not to waste anything, he had made the tea from the boiled egg water.I managed to drink it, but we never fail to remind him of that little “treat”.Jane HardingWinchester Bans on junk food ads (Report, 13 September) and lectures on obesity have limited effectiveness and can be counterproductive.

Max Verstappen punished for swearing in FIA Singapore GP press conference

Max Verstappen has been punished by Formula One’s governing body for swearing in the immediate aftermath of a backlash by the world champion and other drivers against the FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and his demand that drivers cease to use bad language. It is a dispute Verstappen is expected to vigorously return to as this weekend’s meeting in Singapore progresses.Early this week Ben Sulayem had said: “We have to differentiate between our sport – motorsport – and rap music. We’re not rappers, you know. They say the f-word how many times per minute? We are not on that

Normal man, not flash Harry: why Brook is the right choice to lead England | Barney Ronay

Even a stopped clock tells the right time once a day, or twice depending on how you interpret analogue time devices. In this same encouraging spirit I am happy to report that English cricket has accidentally made a good decision, one that will play out, for better or worse, over the next week. This is something we should all be grateful for, even if it is only temporary, even if it begins to look a bit iffy as early as this weekend and Saturday’s second one-day international against Australia. But it does involve Harry Brook and that is generally a good thing.Frankly, any kind of good thing is worth celebrating as the domestic cricket season retreats towards October, nourished only by autumnal clips of people in jumpers doing end-of-days stuff, village batting, bowling impressions, chilly fingered double-bouncers that people in Australia can laugh at and say: “See, I told you

Rahm’s DP World Tour appeal may not end before Ryder Cup, says Kinnings

Guy Kinnings, the chief executive of the European Tour Group, has conceded a crucial appeals process involving Ryder Cup duo Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton may not be concluded before the event returns next September. Kinnings appears hopeful a deal to unite elite golf can be formalised before then, which in theory would negate the case Rahm and Hatton have against his organisation.Rahm and Hatton have been heavily fined for playing on the LIV circuit without releases from the DP World, formerly European, Tour. In order to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup, the pair have appealed against the sanctions. They can play in Europe in the meantime

England Test tour schedule for Pakistan finally confirmed 17 days before start

The schedule for England’s Test series in Pakistan has finally been confirmed, just 17 days before play gets under way, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deciding to move only the second game, which, like the first, will now be played in Multan. The original schedule was announced precisely 11 weeks ago in July, with the first Test in Multan, the second in Karachi and the third in Rawalpindi. But after it became clear that major renovation work on the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, being undertaken with February’s Champions Trophy in mind, would not be completed in time, various options were considered. These included playing the second game in Rawalpindi, keeping it in Karachi but playing it behind closed doors, and even playing one of the Tests in Abu Dhabi. The eventual solution allowed the PCB to present the change as “minor adjustments” and means that any international flights booked in July will not need to be changed

Sublime Sydney surge into AFL grand final with crushing win over Port Adelaide

The SCG has hosted some nerve-shredding finals over the years, but this year’s preliminary final was a jolly romp. By early in the second quarter, it was obvious that the game was being played completely on Sydney’s terms. All the signs were there – a stack of uncontested marks, plenty of space, that Sydney swagger and a febrile crowd. They’ve been tardy starters this year, but they quickly gained the upper hand and never forfeited control. They went into Friday night’s game as warm favourites, with the only real doubts concerning their dire recent record against Port Adelaide
